The number of women being sent sexually explicit pictures by strangers on trains more than doubled last year - but many incidents are going "largely unreported". There were 66 reports of cyber-flashing in compared with 34 in , figures from the British Transport Police show. Cyber-flashing is when a person sends an unsolicited sexual image to a stranger using AirDrop, a file-sharing function on iPhones. Despite the rising number of cases, only one arrest was made in - and it is believed this crime is under-reported because victims believe cyber-flashing is "not serious enough" to contact the police. Campaigners have said that "the actual number of women affected by this will almost certainly be much higher" than the police's official figures. If a victim's AirDrop settings are set to "everyone", it means someone outside of their contacts list can request to send them a file. This can be done anonymously, as all that is shown on the receiving device is a preview of the picture and the name of the iPhone sending the file. As a result, bringing perpetrators to justice can be difficult.

Cyber flashing is a crime which involves sending obscene pictures to strangers through AirDrop. The mainstream initial usage of the term occurred around 13 August , after a female commuter was AirDropped two pictures of a penis. The case was reported to the British Transport Police who indicated that as the pictures were declined insufficient data was recorded by the receiving phone to provide suitable evidence. AirDrop is a hybrid communication method of Bluetooth and Wifi. Bluetooth passes communication via use of UHF radio waves. AirDrop seeks out potential communication partners by use of Bluetooth and then uses it to establish a secure peer-to-peer "Wifi channel" over which the actual information is passed - usually photographs, documents and videos. An appropriately equipped device can seek out any active peers within about 10 metres. A photo can then be sent with a preview of the photo being shown to the device's owner at the same time as a request to allow connection. Therefore the harassment the "flashing" can occur before a specific connection is authorised. Prevention requires reverting to the iPhone's default conditions - either turn AirDrop off or set it only to allow connections with contacts.
